I was dining in the main restaurant in the lovely Watergate Bay hotel in Newquay and this starter just jumped out at me- Beetroot hummus, barrel aged feta and coriander
I love all these ingredients so putting them together was a no brainer for me! The beetroot hummus was so delicately flavoured and garnished with whole chickpeas. The feta cheese just added the right balance of saltiness and texture and small cubes of beetroot added a bit of bite. I loved this starter and now feel inspired to recreate this at home
For my main course I opted for the pan fried bream fillet, roast butternut, lemon and soft herb risotto. This wasn’t such a winner for me and I only managed about a third of it which is really not like me.
There were five of us dining and 3 of us chose the bream fillet. One friend became ill during the main course and I immediately suspected the fish which probably wasn’t a fair assessment. All the same, the flavours of the herb risotto just didn’t agree with me. I almost wish I had ordered two starters instead of a starter and main!
