Healthy Chocolate Date Squares – The Freezer Snack You’ll Always Want On Hand. Easy to make, nutritious and delicious too!

If you’re looking for a healthy snack that ticks all the boxes — sweet, satisfying, full of goodness, and incredibly easy to make — these Healthy Chocolate Date Squares are about to become your new go-to.

Naturally sweet from dates, filled with creamy almond butter, topped with rich dark chocolate, and sprinkled with crunchy seeds and sea salt, they’re the perfect little treat to keep in your freezer for whenever you need a pick-me-up.

What You’ll Need:

  • 200g soft dates (pitted and chopped)

  • 2–3 tablespoons almond butter

  • A small handful of mixed seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, chia, flax — whatever you have!)

  • 100g 85% dark chocolate (or your favourite dark chocolate)

  • A pinch of flaky sea salt

How to Make Them:

  1. Prep the Date Layer:
Place the chopped dates between two sheets of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin or the base of a glass to press into a thin, even layer. Transfer this layer onto a lined baking tray.

  2. Add the Almond Butter:
Gently spread a layer of almond butter over the dates. Don’t worry if it’s a little sticky — that just means it’ll hold everything together nicely.

  3. Sprinkle the Seeds:
Add a generous sprinkle of mixed seeds over the almond butter. These add a lovely crunch and a nutritional boost.

  4. Top with Melted Chocolate:
Melt the dark chocolate (you can do this in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second bursts or gently over a double boiler) and pour it over the top, smoothing it out with a spatula.

  5. Finish with Sea Salt:
Sprinkle some flaky sea salt over the chocolate for that perfect sweet-salty contrast.

  6. Chill & Slice:
Pop the tray in the fridge for at least an hour, or until the chocolate has set completely. Then cut into small squares or bars.

  7. Freeze for Later:
Store in an airtight container in the freezer and just take one out whenever you fancy a little treat. They only need a few minutes at room temperature to soften slightly.

Why These Are So Good for You:

  • Dates are rich in natural sugars and fibre, which helps regulate digestion and provides a slow-releasing energy boost.

  • Almond butter is packed with heart-healthy fats, protein, and vitamin E.

  • Mixed seeds (like chia, pumpkin, and sunflower) are full of magnesium, zinc, fibre, and omega-3s — great for your heart, skin, and energy levels.

  • Dark chocolate (85%) is lower in sugar and rich in antioxidants that support heart health and boost your mood.

  • Sea salt may seem small, but it enhances flavour and can help maintain healthy hydration levels.

Perfect for…

  • A post-lunch treat

  • Pre- or post-workout energy

  • A healthier dessert option

  • Freezer-friendly snacks for the whole family

Give them a try and let me know how they turn out! You can experiment with different nut butters, add a layer of crushed nuts, or even throw in a handful of coconut flakes. These little squares are endlessly customisable — and seriously addictive.
