We may not be able to travel but there’s no reason not to have the lovely taste of Moussaka at home with this tasty recipe.
I decided that as flying isn’t an option, I would create a fakecation. You would be surprised how much the front door of the washing machine resembles an airplane window, especially if you sit beside it with a glass of Prosecco in one hand and a good book in the other. If you have a good enough imagination, you can nearly believe you are jetting off.
I gave my trusty globe a spin to decide the destination for my fakecation and landed on Greece, happily a favourite spot of mine. You just cant go wrong with an idyllic Greek island holiday.
When I am in Greece, my favourite dish is Moussaka. It’s just delicious and a perfect holiday treat. When I make it at home, it’s one of my favourite comfort foods, with lovely layers of mince, griddled aubergines, sliced potatoes, bechamel sauce and parmesan topping. I love it! It may involve a fair bit of effort to make but believe me, it’s worth it!
This is my take on the dish. It changes a little every time I make it but this is my current version. The main things to make it authentic are Lamb mince (I use half lamb & half beef), cinnamon, dried mint and bayleaf in the sauce and nutmeg in the sauce. Apart from that you can add whatever you like.
I recommend serving it with a lovely Greek salad with tomatoes, cucumber, feta cheese, olives, oregano & dressing. It’s the perfect combination
Give it a try and let me know how you get on. I hope you enjoy it!
