While trying to recreate my Grandmother’s home made wheaten bread, I have to confess to cheating a bit.
I remember her confessing to me that her “secret recipe” that everyone asked for was actually taken off the side of the packet of flour! We did laugh a lot over that.
I must admit that my cheat went one step further and I actually bought a preprepared wheaten mix made by Mortons flour. To be fair it was the only wheaten flour that I could see in the supermarket.
I used my grandmothers old earthenware jamjars but a loaf tin is good too. You could also just shape it into a flat round and bake it on a baking tray
So the recipe is as follows:
500g wheaten mix
1 tsp sugar
365g buttermilk
Mix the sugar and wheaten flour
Stir in the buttermilk and use hands to mix to a dough
Grease the jar/ loaf tin/ baking tray and add the dough
Bake in oven for 35 minutes at 200C
Use a knitting needle to check if it is ready. Insert and if it comes out dry it is ready
The other way to check is to tap the bottom of the bread and it should sound hollow
