I was excited to abandon my average Sunday to attend the launch of a new Derry Girls day trip from McComb’s Travel and Hastings Hotels . I am a massive fan of the hit channel 4 TV Show and couldn’t wait to find out more (here’s a little-known fact- I was once asked to audition for a small speaking part in the show. Sadly, I didn’t get it but hey ho!).
After meeting my fellow guests, we boarded our luxury McCombs coach, Derry bound for the Derry Girls walking tour with Martin Mc Crossan City Tours . Our guide Garvin was fantastic craic and a brilliant ambassador for his home city. He showed us several of the filming locations and linked them to specific scenes from the show (he did seem to know the words to every episode!) He also shared details of life in the city, both past and present. For me, a highlight of the tour was a visit to the famous Derry Girls Mural, painted by artist, Karl Porter.
Next up, we headed to The Everglades Hotel for their Derry Girls Afternoon Tea- sandwiches, freshly baked scones & breads and a pastry assortment but with a Derry Girls twist – sausage roll baps, fresh cream horns, cone of chips, Tayto cheese and onion sarnies and a cocktail. Chips with an afternoon tea? You will be surprised how well that works! As if that wasn’t enough, you also get your very own Michelle Derry Girls duck to take home with you!
The price of the experience is £65 pp and can be booked at www.mccombscoaches.com or by calling 028 9086 6162.
