Exploring the food in Alicante

Sunday, April 16, 2023

Alicante, a city located on the eastern coast of Spain, is a perfect destination for those who love sun, sea, and sand. With its beautiful beaches, charming old town, and rich history, it's no surprise that Alicante is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at what makes Alicante such a great place to visit.

Food
Alicante is famous for its cuisine, which is based on fresh seafood and local produce. The city has a wide range of restaurants, from traditional tapas bars to upscale Michelin-starred restaurants. Some of the most popular dishes in Alicante include paella, arroz a banda (rice with fish), and salazones (salted fish). If you’re looking for a quick snack, head to one of the city’s churrerias, where you can try the local specialty, churros con chocolate. The two shout out restaurants for me were Bar Manero with stand out seafood & tapas and Barita de Santa Maria where I enjoyed the best Caesar salad I have ever eaten!

Beaches
Alicante is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. The most famous beach is Playa del Postiguet, located right in the heart of the city. This sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and relaxing with a good book. Another popular beach is San Juan Beach, located just outside the city. This long, wide beach is ideal for water sports, such as surfing and windsurfing. You may be bothered  by masseuses on the beach, offering their services.  Some find this torturous but I gave in and enjoyed a massage on every visit.

Old Town
Alicante’s old town is a maze of narrow streets and alleys, lined with colorful buildings and charming squares. The heart of the old town is the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, a bustling square surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and historic buildings. From here, you can explore the narrow streets of the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the oldest part of Alicante, where you’ll find traditional houses with wrought-iron balconies and flower-filled courtyards. The Castle of Santa Barbara, which sits on top of a hill overlooking the city, is another must-see attraction in the old town.

Nightlife
Alicante is known for its lively nightlife, with a wide range of bars, clubs, and discos. The most popular area for nightlife is the El Barrio neighborhood, where you’ll find a variety of bars and clubs catering to different tastes. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated night out, head to the Casino de Alicante, a glamorous venue located in a beautiful historic building.
Conclusion
Alicante is a city that has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for sun, sea, and sand, or you’re interested in history and culture, you’ll find it all here. With its beautiful beaches, charming old town, delicious food, and lively nightlife, Alicante is a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list.
