Dining at Havana Bank Square, Belfast

Wednesday, December 19, 2018

I've a new favourite restaurant in Belfast and it is Havana Bank Square. Friendly staff, great service and delicious food- what's not to like?

Havana Bank Square is a hidden gem, tucked behind Bank Square in the heart of Belfast.  It prides itself on great local food and fabulous cocktails which is a winning combination to me!

I visited with my good friends, Marc and Paulene for a pre Christmas lunch and I have to say, it was the perfect venue for a great afternoon out.  We started the day at the Sagart which is the sister venue of Havana Bank Square, conveniently located right next door.  After a refreshing Gin and tonic to set us up, we relocated to the restaurant.

On our arrival, we were warmly greeted by our waiter, Robert.  I have met Robert on a previous visit to the Sagart and I can truly say that he is fabulous.  We couldn’t have felt more welcome.  He introduced us to Manager, Michelle who was just as warm and friendly.

As we perused our menus, I took the opportunity to take in the interiors.  It has a Cuban feel and while it is many years since I was in Havana, it did feel reminiscent of my time there.  It’s about to get a bit of a makeover so I can’t wait to see the changes!

We couldn’t decide on a starter so Michelle offered to bring us out her favourites to share.  This was a great idea and we particularly loved the goats cheese and beetroot option.  I will definitely be ordering that again.

For our main courses, I chose the Salt and Chilli Chicken with Asian salad, fries and curry mayo (£11).  I loved this dish and even asked for extra mayo as it was so good!  Paulene opted for the 8 oz Irish Rump burger with Ballymaloe relish, cheddar and fries (£10).  She asked for it without a bun and reported that it was substantial enough without one and tasted great.  Marc ordered the Hannons 10 oz Delmonico Rib-eye steak (£24) which came served with roasted onion, fries and pepper sauce.  While he loved the dish, he was defeated and couldn’t quite finish it.  The staff were happy to package up the remainder of his steak as a doggy bag (I’m pretty sure he actually has a dog!!)  We were so full that we couldn’t even contemplate dessert but were happy to sit on for a while  over an extra glass of wine.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and will definitely be back.  A big shout out to Michelle, Robert and Stephanie, Manager of the Sagart for our fabulous day out and of course to Marc and Paulene for their excellent craic on the day!

The Belfast Cordon

Since the devastating Primark fire, the whole area around Bank Buildings has been cordoned off as a safety measure.  The businesses within the cordon area have been badly affected and it is important that we give them as much support as possible.  The restaurants in the cordon area are Havana Bank Square, The Sagart, Jumon, La Taqueria, Mourne Seafood Bar, Manny’s, Pizza Boutique, Obento West and Maggie May’s  so make sure to pay them a visit to ensure their continued success!
