Channa Masala

Channa Masala is one of my favourite Indian dishes- super tasty and very healthy too! Did you know that “Chana” means chickpea and “masala” means spice blend so this is basically a chickpea curry. I play around with the spices every time I make this but this is my current favourite.


  • 400g tin chickpeas
  • 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 3 cm piece of ginger
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp ground coriander
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Coriander leaves to garnish 
  • Blitz the onion, salt, oil, green chilli & ginger into a paste
  • Fry the paste for around 10 minutes until it’s really soft
  • Drain the chickpeas
  • Add the spices to the pan and cook for around 5 minutes (if needed, add some water to stop the spices from sticking to the pan)
  • Add the tomatoes and chickpeas
  • Simmer for around 20 minutes
  • Add the lemon and some more water to get the consistency you like
  • Sprinkle over some coriander leaves to serve
