Home Made Crumpets

Thursday, July 23, 2020

A recipe and instructions for making traditional home-made crumpets. So tasty and perfect with either sweet or savoury toppings.

I love crumpets and you really can’t beat a home made one.  There’s nothing quite like it.

These are the perfect base for any topping.  They are equally good with sweet or savoury toppings.  I like mine simply topped with butter but they are also excelled with cheese and pickle or even as a pizza base.  The possibilities are endless!

  • 225g Strong plain flour
  • 275ml milk
  • 50ml water
  • 1 tsp table salt
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 7g sachet fast-action dried yeast
  • Melted butter for greasing
  • Oil for the pan
  • Preheat the oven to 150C
  • Heat the milk and water in a until warm.  It should be just warm enough to put your finger in there for a few seconds
  • Place the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and make a well in the middle.  Pour the warm milk & water into mixture and stir to make a really smooth batter
  • Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and leave in a warm place for 40 minutes.  The batter should have risen and have lots of bubblesBrush the insides of the rings with a little melted butter (if you don’t have rings, try empty shop bought cans with both ends removed)
  • Heat a heavy-based frying and brush with the melted butter mixed with a little oil (this will stop the butter from burning)
  • Place the rings in the pan making sure they are flat
  • When the butter is hot, spoon about 3 tbsp of the batter into each ring
  • Cook on a low heat for 10-15 mins until you see bubbles on the top but the mix bounces back to the touch
  • Remove the rings using a cloth or tea towel, then flip the crumpets and cook for 2 minutes more
  • Set the cooked crumpets on a baking tray
  • Repeat with the rest of the mixture
  • When all the crumpets are cooked, place them in the oven for 5 minutes to dry out
  • Serve immediately or cool and toast when required
